Graphic history of the Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia, Pa., 1876, 1908-1909 / by Walter Runnels, Hawthorn, Ia.

Original handwritten account of Walter Runnels' visit to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 and two other trips made later. His introduction includes a description of Philadelphia and the opening of the Centennial Exhibition by President "U.S. Grant." The exhibits were described from his Program for the Exhibition, alphabetically by subjects: Agriculture, books, Botany, Fossils, Indians, Manufactures and Inventions, etc. Runnels augmented the descriptions with information drawn from dictionaries and encyclopedias of the period and his own remembrances. He also made a trip in 1909 which he added to the journal. This trip included Washington, D.C. and its government buildings, New York City, Albany, Niagara Falls, Columbus, Ohio, and his ancestral home in Newark, Ohio.

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors.
